Mapping of External References
The purpose of this mapping is to show what organisations, bodies and work are most commonly referenced externally from the various standards and recommendations that we looked at. The mapping shows everything from individual academic papers through to standards from Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs) through to recommendations material from think tanks, individual companies and industry organisations.
The map can be zoomed to look at specific organisations and linkages. Click on each circle to find out more information. Hover over an organisation node to highlight it’s connections, click and hold to focus the connections and hide unconnected nodes.
Three different versions of the map are available by clicking the buttons above the map. “All References” is the default view, “No Self-References” removes any instances of an organisation referencing other documents from the same organisation, and “Accessible Version” changes the colours and shapes of the nodes to be more distinguishable.
Use of Colours
Each circle is sized and coloured according to the number of references – a lighter green and small circle denotes a small number of references whereas a dark green and larger circle denotes a high number of references.
The legend explains the coloured outer ring of the circles. These denote the type of organisations in the reference as listed.

An accessible version of the mapping to meet WCAG 2.2 requirements is available which uses more distinguishable colours and different shapes to denote the organisation types. An example of the changes can be seen below:
